ISO 14000 is a set of environmental management standards developed to assist organizations to:
minimize the negative impacts of their activities (processes etc) on the environment, such as causing adverse changes to air, water or land;
comply with applicable law and enforceable environmental laws and regulations;
fix things above on an ongoing basis.
ISO 14000 is similar to ISO 9000 - quality management in terms of how a product is produced rather than about the product itself. As with ISO 9000, the certification is performed by a third party, not by the ISO itself. ISO 19001 audit standard is applied when auditing ISO 9000 and 14000 compliance at once.
The requirements of ISO 140001 are an integral part of the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which is more demanding, especially regarding upgrading tasks, legal compliance and performance reporting.
